Does anyone have access to: (23 Octobris 1913): AAS 5 (1913), 449-450; and, also, able to translate from the Latin, Pope St. Pius X's Abhinc Duos Annos? This Motu Proprio (I believe it is) contains some insights into the mind of this great Pontiff. Below, is a small section of this Motu Proprio translated (and, I'm not sure how correctly this has been translated) that uses terms, that are correct in themselves, when used with the mind of Holy Mother Church, but appear to have been appropriated by the modernists for their own agenda.

This Motu Proprio has for its topic the Breviary, but because of the changes in the calendar, etc., it touches the changes that would have accompanied the Breviary for the Missal. Once, again, we all must be careful to not "throw the baby out with the bath water". Notice that the sainted Pontiff talks about the "squalidness brought by time" (again, if this is translated correctly) that needs to be "purified". The Liturgical Movement was a necessary, prudent, and anxiously awaited development that was foreseen by Pope St. Pius X to take decades of study and application. Because it was much later hijacked by the Church's enemies cannot be used as a reason to ignore Pope Pius XII's and Pope John XXIII's changes, imo.

Pope St. Pius X wrote:
"Two years ago, in publishing Our Apostolic Constitution, Divino Afflatu, We had especially in sight the recitation, as far as possible in its entirety, of the Psalter on weekdays, and the restoration of the ancient Sunday offices. But Our mind was occupied by many other projects – some mere plans, others already on the way to realization – relating to reform in the Roman breviary.

However, because of the numerous difficulties preventing Us from executing them, We had to postpone them for a more favourable moment. To change the composition of the Breviary to make it in accordance with Our desires, that is, to give it a finished perfection in every part would involve:

-restoring the calendar of the Universal Church to its original arrangement and style, retaining meanwhile the splendid richness, which the marvelous fruitfulness of the Church, the Mother of Saints, has brought to bear upon it.

-utilising appropriate passages of Scripture, of the Father and doctors, after having reestablished the authentic text;

-prudently correcting the lives of the Saints according to documentary evidence

Perfecting the arrangement of numerous point of the liturgy, eliminating superfluous elements. But in the judgment of wise and learned persons, all this would require considerable work and time. For this reason, many years will have to pass before this type of liturgical edifice, composed with intelligent care for the spouse of Christ to express her piety and faith, can appear purified of the squalidness brought by time, newly resplendent with dignity and fitting order.

In the meantime, through correspondence and conversations with a number of bishops, We have learnt of their urgent desire – shared by many priests – to find in the Breviary, together with the new arrangement of the Psalter and its rubrics, all the changes which have already come or which might come with this new Psalter. They have repeatedly asked Us, indeed they have repeatedly manifested their earnest desire that the new psalter be used more often, that the Sundays be observed more conscientiously, that provision be made for the inconvenience of transferred offices, and that certain other changes be affected which seem to be justified. Because they are grounded in objectivity and completely conform to Our desire, We have agreed to these requests and We believe the moment has come to grant them.

I. In Officiis tarn novem quam trium Lectionum, quando-
cumque sumuntur Lectiones de Scriptura occurrenti, cum eis
adhibeantur Responsoria de Tempore: ita tamen ut Lectiones
Dominicae cuiuslibet, etiam si reponantur infra hebdomadam
et simul cum Lectionibus de Feria dicantur, sumant semper
Responsoria de I Nocturno ipsius Dominicae; Lectiones vero
de Feria, si transferantur vel anticipentur, dummodo tamen
simul cum Lectionibus Dominicae non dicantur, sumant Re-
sponsoria de Feria currenti, in Feriis Temporis Paschalis

3. Similiter omnia quae in Festo S. Elisabeth Reginae et

Commemoratio iuxta Rubricas, et legitur IX Lectio historica.
Si tamen Festum impediens fuerit Duplex I classis Domini
universalis Ecclesiae, nil fit de Festo ut supra impedito : si
vero fuerit aliud Duplex I classis, de Officio impedito fit

quacumque consuetudine aut privilegio. Ubi vero solemnitas
externa die 25 et 26 respective celebretur, his diebus permit-


titur unica Missa cantata vel lecta de ea Solemnitate, ut
supra statutum est pro Festis diei Dominicae hucusque affixis.

(e) Privilegium quibus nonnullae Dioeceses vel Instituta
gaudent, sese scilicet conformandi Kalendario Cleri Romani,
aut alicuius Ordinis seu Congregationis, et alia huiusmodi,
penitus aboletur.

Ouae omnia, per infrascriptum huius S. Rituum Congre-
gationis Secretarium, sanctissimo Domino nostro Pio Pp. X

In other words. when conducted by orthodox prelates, not all change is bad :) :)

I think somewhere on this forum, John has explained 'change' according to the mind of Holy Mother Church, and its possible dangers. But, you are absolutely correct when you state that
... when conducted by orthodox prelates, not all change is bad.
I'd say further, in this vale of tears, some change is necessary, but, always, 'reluctantly'.

See St. Thomas, in the Summa, in the section on Law. I haven't time to find the reference, but he explains that all change works some evil, so that rulers must be sure that a great good will be secured, or a great evil mitigated, by any proposed change, or else it will be unworthwhile to make it.
